ICANN: Generation Panel for the Armenian Script ‭Root Zone‬ Label Generation Rules Seated‬‬‬‬

ICANN is pleased to announce that the Generation Panel for the Armenian Script Root Zone Label Generation Rules ( LGR ) has been seated.

Following the Call for Generation Panels to Develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules published on 11 July 2013, the Armenian script community has developed and submitted to ICANN , on 27 January 2015, the Proposal for the Generation Panel for the Armenian Script Label Generation Ruleset for the Root Zone . ICANN staff has reviewed the proposal including panel composition and scope, to ensure that requirements set forth in the LGR Procedure, and in particular the criteria set forth in the Call for Generation Panels to Develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules, are fulfilled.

On behalf of ICANN , we would like to use this opportunity to thank each of the members for offering their time and expertise to volunteer for the Armenian Script Generation Panel.

With composition and work plan approved, the Armenian Script Generation Panel will start its work on the label generation rules. According to the LGR Procedure, the starting point of any Generation Panel’s work is the Maximal Starting Repertoire (MSR), with it’s first version (MSR-1) released on 20 June 2014 and the second version (MSR-2) currently under community review. The full specification of Generation Panel’s tasks can be found in the LGR Procedure in particular, Section B.3 “Variant Rule Generation Procedure”.

ICANN will provide a central public location workspace on the project website, where Armenian Script Generation Panel proposal, composition, work plan updates, public reports, contact details, and any other relevant information will be included.

As a reminder, and to highlight the importance of script community involvement required in the development of the IDN Root Zone LGR , we would like to reiterate the Call for Generation Panels to Develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules. A successful development of the IDN Root Zone LGR depends on having Generation Panels for each script represented in the Root Zone . In the IDN Root Zone LGR development, in addition to ongoing efforts with the Arabic, Armenian and Chinese scripts, Generation Panel formation is expected to cover other scripts including Bengali, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Ethiopic, Georgian, Greek, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Hebrew, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Lao, Latin, Myanmar, Oriya, Sinhala, Tamil, Telugu, Thai and Tibetan.

For further information on how to form a Generation Panel or to express individual or group statements of interest for the establishment of a Generation Panel, please refer to the Call for Generation Panels to Develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules and to the additional supporting documentation provided on the Root Zone LGR Project website.

Overview of Africa Sessions During ICANN 52 Meeting in Singapore

ICANN ‘s 52nd Public Meeting is taking place in Singapore from 8 -12 February at the Raffles City Convention Centre. This meeting comes at a critical time especially with the recent developments since the historic NTIA announcement to transition stewardship of the IANA functions to the multistakeholder community last March 4, 2014.

During this meeting, the ICANN Africa team will be hosting two critical meetings namely:

    1. The Africa Strategy 2016 – 2020 Meeting

    1. Enhanced Engagement With Africa

Wed, 11 February 2015 – 10:30 to 11:45 SGT

One of the outstanding challenges observed by the community is the limited meaningful and consistent participation of the African community in most Supporting Organizations and Advisory Committees in ICANN and the wider IG ecosystem especially by governments. Africa is yet to make her voice and influence heard in the global policy making processes on issues affecting the Internet and there is need to proactively and progressively change this scenario.

Consequently, the Africa Strategy Review team alongside the AFRINIC 21 meeting deliberated and came up with a list of four projects expected to enhance ICANN ’s Engagement in Africa leading to the ICANN 55 meeting in Marrakech Morocco next year. These special projects focusing on reaching out mainly to African governments and regulators include:

      1. Active participation in African regional and continental ICT ministerial meetings
      2. ICANN High Level Governmental Meeting (HLGM), During ICANN 55
      3. NewGen Program during ICANN 55
      4. Workshop for Africa Telecom regulators during ICANN 55

This briefing session scheduled will share with you details of these projects and seek your further input. For Remote participation, please follow here: singapore52.icann.org/en/schedule/wed-africa-engagement

We take this opportunity to welcome you, our community, to these two Africa sessions as we endeavor to deliver collectively on the Africa Strategy. We shall also share recordings of both sessions after the meeting using the same links.
