Adiel Akplogan to Join ICANN as VP of Technical Engagement

[news release] Veteran Internet technology expert Adiel Akplogan is joining ICANN in the newly created role of Vice President for Technical Engagement.

Akplogan served most recently as the Chief Executive Officer of AfriNIC , the Internet Numbers’ Resource Registry for Africa, a position he has held since 2004.

“I’m delighted to welcome Adiel to ICANN ,” said Sally Costerton, Special Advisor to the President for Global Stakeholder Engagement. “He is a highly respected contributor to the Internet community and his experienced leadership will reinforce and deepen ICANN ‘s long term participation in the technical community of which it is a critical part.”

Akplogan is among the original Internet pioneers in West Africa, where he has played a critical role in setting up and managing CAFENet, one of the first private Internet Service Providers in the region.

“It’s my sincere hope that I can help ICANN achieve the high level of operational excellence that it is aiming for,” said Adiel. “We are all striving to maintain and improve a global communication and information system that will define our future on multiple levels.”

In his new position, Akplogan will help ICANN conduct technical engagement and outreach. He will also provide some valuable links to the ICT community on the African continent, since he was instrumental in establishing several technical coordination bodies such as the African Network Operators Group (AfNOG), the African ccTLD Managers Association (AfTLD), AfricaCERT and the Africa Internet Summit (AIS).

Akplogan will be based in Montreal, Canada and will assume his new position on March 1.

Domain Name Association Survey Reveals Strong Interest in New gTLDs

[news release] The Domain Name Association (DNA) has announced the results of a recent global survey to ascertain Internet users’ attitudes toward new Internet domain-name extensions, such as “.club” and “.global,” that are being released through ICANN’s “New gTLD Program.”

This Domain Name Preference study was conducted in 10 countries and obtained over 5,000 completed responses. A results summary and analysis can be downloaded from the DNA website; the full survey results are available to DNA members.

The survey was designed to measure global attitudes about awareness, acceptance, preference and knowledge related to domain names. Established top-level generic names and country-code names (gTLD and ccTLD) were tested along with new generic top-level names.

Specific conclusions, some transcending expectations, were derived from the collected data:

Domain names continue to be highly relevant. While there is a slight preference for search as a tool to navigate the Internet, almost everyone (85% of those polled) types a domain name into a browser address bar part of the time. And the great majority checks the domain names (at least sometimes) before clicking on search results.
Internet users around the world are very open to using domain names that include new domain-name extensions. Respondents consistently voiced an equal preference for new domain-name extensions as compared with .com or the local ccTLD (such as .ca in Canada), even though they may not have been aware of the new gTLD Program. There is a particular willingness to accept names that meaningfully indicate the expected content or use of a website (e.g., .secure, .bike).
Nearly 60% of respondents voiced a preference for more domain name and domain-name extension options, and the fastest-growing Internet markets show the greatest interest in expanding domain name options: e.g., 75% in India, 69% in China. In countries with high Internet penetration, the “lesser” demand for new domain-name extensions is around 50% — that still represents a large potential market for a new product.
The survey also supplied some reasons why new extensions would be welcome:
— >50% said new web addresses in meaningful combinations will be easier to remember
— >50% said new domain extensions will make it easier to obtain short, memorable names
Internet users generally remain unaware of the opportunities in the new gTLD Program. Numbers varied widely from country to country but results indicate low awareness of the availability of new domain-name extensions and new types of domain names.

“Our survey results show that Internet users still employ domain names widely, voice a preference for more domain name and domain-name extension options, and ‘get it’ when it comes to the possibilities,” said Kurt Pritz, Executive Director of the DNA. “These are important findings for the Domain-Name Industry, indicating a bright future for all domain-name extensions. When Internet users generally become aware of the new domain options, we expect widespread acceptance and even eagerness to adopt them.”

The DNA chose Research Now, a global firm headquartered in the U.S., to conduct the survey.

Flippa Reports $2,15 Million in Domain Name Sales in 2014

Flippa has just released its 2014 Year in Review report.Domain name sales add up to a total of $2,15 million, a 50 percent increase from 2013’s slate.

According to a blog post , Flippa announced that it is now one of the top five marketplaces.

“It’s been 13 months since Flippa’s Domains division officially put itself on the map. The new kid on the block at last year’s Namescon, people were curious. We commonly heard things like, “I know you’re #1 for buying and selling websites, but I didn’t know you sold domains, too!”

2014 Year in Review for Flippa Domains

We established an Appraisal Service in order to foster community involvement, and help those newer to the domaining world ascertain what “the crowd” would think their asset was worth. This was an interesting experiment, met with a lot of excitement (and a bit of criticism that we will be addressing). All in all, involvement is strong and we’re finding that on the whole, appraisers’ feedback is valuable to participants.

Post Auction Negotiation

We solved an interesting issue that Flippa domain buyers and sellers both shared: auctions that ended unsuccessfully but still had two parties keen on closing a deal. By introducing Post Auction Negotiation, a seller could take an unsold auction and pitch his or her Buy It Now price to still-interested buyers and watchers of that auction. Conversely, bidders who had not hit the reserve or who had missed the end of the auction could step-in post auction to pitch their best offer. Domain Catalog

While we lowered our standard auction listing fee to $9, there were many large portfolio holders that lacked the budget to bring hundreds, if not thousands, of domains to market at that clip – let alone possess the time it would take to do so. So we built the Domain Catalog which allowed domainers of all stripes to upload their inventory on an offer/counter-offer/Buy-Now basis — with no upfront cost.

Flippa Exclusives

Building up our Premium Domain brand was a major goal of 2014. Flippa Exclusives were just that: they signified the arrival of Premium domain names that could only be acquired — exclusively — on the Flippa platform. Some of our most successful sales in 2014 were Exclusive to Flippa, forging lasting partnerships with premium domain buyers and sellers along the way.

By The Numbers

In a whole, we had an incredible first year “on record.” Beginning with less than 850 open auctions, our domains platform found itself accommodating over a quarter million by year’s end. We reached $2.15 million in gross sales, a 50% increase from 2013′s slate. Buyer and seller engagement shot through the roof. And that’s not even considering what’s coming next…

Portfolio Section (soon to be formerly known as Domain Catalog)

On the non-auction side of the coin, thousands of domains are being added daily to the Domain Catalog — now home to nearly 450,000 domains. But since you and every domainer reading this possess a “portfolio” and not a “catalog” of domain inventory, we will soon be re-branding this as the new and improved Flippa Domains Portfolio section. New .CANCERRESEARCH Unique Among New gTLDs With A Goal As Information Resource

On the day that, in the UK at least, it was announced half of all people will be diagnosed with cancer and on World Cancer Day, the new gTLD .CancerResearch has launched.

The gTLD is not going to be available for the general public to register domains. Nor is it a brand. Instead its goal is probably unique among the 1,000 plus gTLDs that are expected to launch.

The Australian Cancer Research Foundation, who applied for the gTLD with strategic and technical support from ARI Registry Services, is using the gTLD to promote cancer research through a network of websites that have been developed in conjunction with scientists and research centres.

It is the first TLD to be launched with a network of websites that provide reliable and trusted information to the global community and is solely aimed at eradicating one of the biggest challenges facing today’s society.

This begins with the home page which can be found at home.cancerresearch, and is supported by a promotional campaign whereby individuals are invited to be part of ‘The One’ that helps end cancer. This innovative digital promotion can be found at theone.cancerresearch.

The goal of .cancerresearch TLD is to bring together a collection of sites containing news, stories and information on cancer and those searching for a cure – which will create a platform for the ACRF to connect with the community and provide hope by sharing the significant advances in cancer research.

ARI Registry Services’ Head of Global Consulting, Tony Kirsch explains the new TLD also highlights the benefits of intuitive and easy to remember domain names.

“We really think that the community will embrace the simplicity of visiting for example, home.cancerresearch for the home page or lung.cancerresearch for information specific to lung cancer or even donate.cancerresearch when people would like to contribute,” said Kirsch.

ARI Registry Services’s consulting division was engaged to assist with the application, strategy and implementation of the .cancerresearch project, and hopes it will provide a powerful demonstration of the innovative ways organisations and brands can use new TLDs.

As a long-term advocate for new TLDs through ICANN’s New gTLD Program, ARI Registry Services is optimistic about the positive impact .cancerresearch can have on the domain industry at large.

Kirsch added, “It’s vital for the industry to see innovative approaches to using TLDs.

“While we have collectively made significant inroads since the first delegation in 2013, substantial work is required before we can be confident that end user awareness has been achieved.

“We’re confident that .cancerresearch provides a significant real world example of how a TLD can be used to create a digital movement that helps to overcome one of the largest challenges facing society today.

“We hope it will help all new TLD applicants – in particular those that have applied for a .brand and are struggling with the internal appetite for launching their TLD”.
