EURid Compensates CO2 Emissions Through Wind Turbine Construction
[news release]To compensate for the CO2 emissions of its offices in 2012, EURid, the registry for the .eu top-level domain, has purchased verified CO2 credits that will go towards the construction of 75 wind turbines in the region of Gujarat, India.
“We made a commitment to greening the environment by embracing the Environmental Management and Audit Scheme philosophy in 2012. The CO2 compensation effort is part of our EMAS plan that consists of nine objectives and 41 actions to achieve them,” commented .eu’s External Relations Manager Giovanni Seppia. “We are pleased to be the first European registry to reduce its CO2 emissions and we look forward to making this a best practice in our industry.”
In total the turbines will generate 59.4 MW of clean energy which will displace the electricity produced by fossil fuel-based electricity plants in the same country. One of the project’s strengths is the great proactive participation of the local community.
Calculating .eu’s carbon footprint
To calculate the emissions of its offices during 2012, EURid audited its paper and energy consumption for heating, air conditioning, transport and the use and end-of-life phases of the average .eu domain name.
Based on the audit review, performed by RINA Services S.p.A., an independent third party which declared the audit conform in November 2013, EURid’s carbon footprint emissions for 2012 were 11.13 kg CO2 eq. per .eu domain name.
The study to assess the registry’s CO2 emissions was performed following a “company approach”, meaning that data collection and system modelling were performed separately for each of the registry’s four offices for the 2012 period. GHG aircraft emissions were taken into account where appropriate, but were separately accounted for as required by ISO/TS 14067. All figures were then divided by the actual production of the reference product (one .eu domain name) and accounted per functional unit (one .eu domain name).
Together with the compensation of CO2 emissions, EURid will follow the recommendations that were produced during the audit, including a commitment to reduce energy consumption where possible and use greener means of transport. Both recommendations are also part of the registry’s EMAS plan for 2012-2015.
EURid will start assessing its 2013 CO2 emissions in Q1 2014, with the goal of compensating them by the end of Q2 2014. For more information about EURid’s commitment to going green please visit eurid.eu/green.

Nominet Sued By Cartier Over Alleged Intellectual Property Infringements
Nominet has found itself being sued by Cartier International AG over 12 websites which contain content Cartier believes infringe their intellectual property (IP) rights. The case is being seen as a test case, which is highlighted by Cartier choosing not to go through any established dispute resolution procedures.
The .uk registry notes that if successful, the injunction would have the effect of forcing domain registries such as Nominet to automatically suspend web addresses based on a private company’s belief that the associated websites infringe its IP.
Nominet considers that the Cartier legal action is not only superfluous and misdirected, but would also set a damaging precedent.
In a statement, Nominet note they consistently take action to protect both consumers and brand owners using established and effective procedures.
When notified of Cartier’s action, Nominet treated this as a standard data quality complaint and as a result suspended eleven of the domain names cited. The remaining domain name had already been cancelled prior to the complaint. In contrast, the claimant chose not to use any of the established mechanisms of recourse, even when those were brought to their attention by Nominet, in favour of court action.
In correspondence, Cartier has stated that it aims to use the UK as a test case to “establish a precedent that can be used to persuade courts in other jurisdictions where registries are less co-operative.”
This appears, according to Nominet, to acknowledge that there are already adequate mechanisms in place to pursue complaints about any website connected with a .uk domain name.
As a responsible registry, Nominet notes it plays its part by ensuring that domain names do not infringe brand rights, and by a commitment to holding good data on its registrations so that consumers and businesses know who they are dealing with. Registrations with poor quality data are suspended when identified via proactive checks or brought to their attention by third parties.
Companies can report concerns about the content of a website – for example sales of counterfeit goods – to the police to determine criminality. Private companies can also take civil action against the owners of websites whose content they believe infringes their rights. If this is not possible due to lack of accurate data, Nominet will suspend registrations.
“Nominet has an excellent reputation for running the .uk registry for public benefit, balancing the open nature of the internet with due respect for legal rights,” said Lesley Cowley, Nominet CEO. “We have processes and procedures already in place that work well. It is disappointing that the point of the legal action is not the suspension of the domains in question – which has already happened – but to place legal liability on domain name registries elsewhere for the content of all the sites connected to their namespace.”

ICANN : Number of New Generic Top-Level Domains delegated into the Internet’s Root Zone Topped 100
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced today that the number of new gTLDs delegated into the Internet’s Root Zone has topped 100.
You can read the press release after the jump:
“ICANN’s Generic Domains Division today announced that the number of new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) delegated into the Internet’s Root Zone has topped 100. Delegation is one of the final steps before the Registries that control the domains may begin accepting registrations for names that will use the new gTLDs.
“There are now almost five times more generic Top-Level Domains than there were only a few months ago and that translates to greater consumer choice,” said Akram Atallah, President of ICANN’s Global Domains Division. “We are as eager as everyone else to see what type of innovation these new Domains will usher into the online world.”
This massive expansion of the Domain Name System (DNS) represents one of the greatest changes to the Internet since its inception.
“This is an historic milestone for ICANN’s New gTLD Program and the Internet as a whole,” said Christine Willett, Vice President of gTLD Operations. “The year ahead will be defined by new opportunities in a vastly expanding online landscape.”
In addition to the new delegations, over 200 Registry Agreements (RA) have been signed by new gTLD applicants. Signing an agreement allows applicants to move onto the final stages of the Program and prepare for delegation into the DNS.
ICANN will continue to delegate new generic Top-Level Domains on a regular basis.”
