.COM Turns 30 and Verisign Wants to Celebrate, But Only With Americans
If you’re American, Verisign wants you to join them in celebrating .com turning 30 years old. So the .com registry is giving away $55,000 – five monthly winners, one of which will win a grand prize of $30,000 – to someone with a business idea who registers the most original, memorable and keyword-rich .com domain name as a result.
Verisign says of their contest that “the best part is the qualities that make your domain name a contest contender are the same ones that provide a great foundation for your business’s online presence. The most important decision you can make when establishing an online identity is choosing the right domain name, narrowing in on one that’s descriptive and original, easy for your audience to remember and packed with search-friendly keywords.”
A panel of judges and the public’s votes will determine the five best domain names registered each month during the contest period.
Verisign note “there are millions of strong .com domain names available for registration by those that aren’t. More than 95 percent of five-character and over 99 percent of six-character .com name combinations are available for registration and ready to house your business’s online brand.” Good luck though in finding that elusive, memorable domain name though that you can use. It can be tough, and it can often take a bit of searching and thinking to get something that is meaningful when, according to RegistrarStats there are 115.6 million .com domain names registered around the world.
But to help you out, Verisign has provided a website that includes some “tips for selecting a great domain name.”
The contest, which is open to U.S. residents only, will feature up to five monthly winners (for a total of 15) and one grand prize winner. A panel of top industry influencers and surprise celebrity judges, as well as the public’s votes will determine the five best .com domain names entered into the contest each month during the contest’s three month entry period. Each monthly winner will receive $5,000 and the opportunity to submit a video explaining the beauty of their entry. Those monthly winners who submit a video will proceed to the final round for an opportunity to win the grand prize amount – $30,000! And if you scroll down to the bottom of the competition website, you will even find an option whereby no purchase of anything is required with a mail-in alternate method of entry.
