ICANN : Generation Panel for the Arabic Script Root Zone Label Generation Rules Seated

ICANN is pleased to announce that the Generation Panel for the Arabic Script Root Zone Label Generation Rules (LGR) has been seated.

Following the Call for Generation Panels to Develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules published on 11 July 2013, the Task Force on Arabic Script Internationalized Domain Names (TF-AIDN), a community-driven initiative of the Middle East Strategy Working Group (MESWG), has developed and submitted to ICANN, on 13 January 2014, the Proposal for Generation Panel for Arabic Script Label Generation Ruleset for the Root Zone [PDF, 772 KB] (LGR Procedure). ICANN staff has reviewed the proposal including panel composition and scope, to ensure that requirements set forth in the LGR Procedure [PDF, 772 KB], and in particular the criteria set forth in the Call for Generation Panels to Develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules, are fulfilled.

ICANN would also like to use this opportunity to thank each of the members for offering their time and expertise to volunteer on the Arabic Script Generation Panel.

With composition and work plan approved, the Arabic Script Generation Panel will start its work on the label generation rules. According to the LGR Procedure, the starting point of any Generation Panel’s work is the maximal set of code points defined by the Integration Panel as well as a set of Default Whole Label Variant Evaluation Rules. The full specification of Generation Panel’s tasks can be found in the LGR Procedure [PDF, 772 KB] in particular, Section B.3 “Variant Rule Generation Procedure”.

ICANN will provide a central public location workspace on the project website where Arabic Script Generation Panel composition, work plan updates, public reports, contact details, and any other relevant information will be included.

As a reminder, and to highlight the importance of script community involvement required in the development of the IDN Root Zone LGR, we would like to reiterate the Call for Generation Panels to Develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules. A successful development of the IDN Root Zone LGR depends on having Generation Panels for each script represented in the Root Zone. In the first stages of the IDN Root Zone LGR development and in addition to ongoing efforts with the Arabic script, Generation Panel formation is expected to cover following scripts: Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic, Greek, Latin, Bengali, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Sinhala, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, and Georgian (i.e., scripts represented in existing applications from both New gTLD and IDN ccTLD Programs).

For further information on how to form a Generation Panel or to express individual or group statements of interest for the establishment of a Generation Panel, please refer to the Call for Generation Panels to Develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules and to the additional supporting documentation provided on the Root Zone LGR Project website.

.BERLIN Sunrise Commences 14 February

The Sunrise period for .berlin commenced on 14 February to allow trademark holders to register domains for the German capital’s new gTLD. The 30-day Sunrise phase takes place before general availability that will allow Berliners to register their desired domain.

The requirement for preferential registration during the Sunrise phase is that brand owners register their trademark in the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH). This central trademark database was established for the protection of brands under new gTLDs. Information about the TMCH and a list of service providers who perform the service can be found at www.trademark-clearinghouse.com.

Another advantage of the TMCH is that brand owners are informed, if in the first three months after launch of .berlin a third party registers a brand identical to their domain names. More information on .berlin can be found at www.nic.berlin.

National Network to End Domestic Violence Voted Winner of the .ORG Website Makeover Contest
Anti-Violence Advocacy Group Garners More than 9,400 Votes to Win a Newly Redesigned Website from Public Interest Registry and OmniStudio

Public Interest Registry, the not-for-profit operator of the .ORG domain, today (12 February) announced the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) as the winner of the inaugural .ORG Website Makeover Contest. NNEDV received more than 9,400 votes from organisation supporters during an open public voting period. NNEDV will now work alongside OmniStudio, a Washington, D.C.-based firm specialising in web design and consulting for non-profit and advocacy groups, to create a new website that will help elevate its online presence, grow audience reach and increase awareness of its mission and efforts to prevent and end domestic violence.

Public Interest Registry launched the .ORG Website Makeover Contest as part of an ongoing effort to empower non-profit organisations and groups to effectively advance their causes online. The contest was launched in conjunction with Public Interest Registry’s own rebranding and newly launched website, which helped represent the organisation as the trustworthy, purposeful, spirited and collaborative operator of .ORG and the soon-to-be-launched .NGO | .ONG domains.

“It has been a heartening experience to watch thousands of community members join together in support of the finalists and ultimately help the National Network to End Domestic Violence emerge as our first contest winner,” said Nancy Gofus, COO of Public Interest Registry. “We agree with the voting public that NNEDV’s passion and dedication exemplifies the values that we, at Public Interest Registry, have long associated with .ORG. A refreshed website not only provides the organisation with an opportunity to further engage its community but also continue to inspire and lead its supporters in a new, invigorated way.”

Kim Gandy, president and CEO of the National Network to End Domestic Violence: “For nearly 20 years, NNEDV has worked to amplify survivors’ voices and build the path to ending domestic violence. Our website has served as a primary medium for survivors, allies and policymakers to learn about domestic violence, get help for themselves and others, and take action. We are honoured by this tremendous opportunity from Public Interest Registry and OmniStudio to improve accessibility to our website, which will help us shed light on the scourge of domestic violence and on NNEDV’s many resources and programs that are working to create an environment where violence against women no longer exists.”

The .ORG Website Makeover Contest began with an open nomination period in late 2013, during which Public Interest Registry and OmniStudio called for non-profits, community groups and corporate foundations across the nation to share how a redesigned website would help their organisation and bolster greater communication of their ideas, missions and causes. A panel of judges then selected 10 finalists to advance to a public voting round.
