Internet Hall of Fame Welcomes 2014 Inductees at Ceremony in Hong Kong

Ceremony celebrates 24 new members whose vision, innovation, and determination helped shape today’s Internet and expand global connectivity

[news release] Twenty-four people who designed and advanced the Internet as the global, world-changing platform that it is today will be inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame. The Internet Hall of Fame was launched in 2012 by the Internet Society and this year’s ceremony will be held in Hong Kong on 8 April. Representing 13 countries, the 2014 class of inductees have pushed the boundaries of technological and social innovation to connect the world.  Their trailblazing accomplishments are as broad and diverse as the Internet itself; expanding the Internet’s benefits into new regions and communities, and creating new technologies and standards that were foundational to the Internet’s development and expansion.

The Internet Hall of Fame celebrates Internet leaders and innovators from around the world who believe in the design and potential of an open Internet and, through their work, have helped change the way we live and work today. The 2014 inductees embody that vision:

Pioneers Circle – Recognizing individuals who were instrumental in the early design and development of the Internet:

Innovators – Recognizing individuals who made outstanding technological, commercial, or policy advances and helped to expand the Internet’s reach:

Global Connectors – Recognizing individuals from around the world who have made significant contributions to the global growth and use of the Internet:

“We all benefit today from the contributions of these individuals who helped shape the global Internet,” noted Internet Society CEO Kathy Brown. “They fearlessly forged into uncharted territory with innovative ideas, groundbreaking technologies, and collaborative work to connect more people and countries to the Internet. We are delighted to honor these inspiring leaders for their foresight, creativity, dedication, and achievements.”

The Internet Hall of Fame is sponsored by Afilias, http://afilias.info/, which connects the world with reliable, secure, scalable and globally available technology that makes Internet addresses more accessible and useful; and TeliaSonera International Carrier, http://www.teliasoneraic.com/, which owns and operates one of the world’s most extensive fiber backbones. Cathay Pacific Airways is the official airline of the 2014 Internet Hall of Fame.

The 2014 Internet Hall of Fame induction celebration will be hosted by the Internet Society’s Hong Kong Chapter, and held in conjunction with the International IT Fest 2014, organized by the Hong Kong Office of the Government Chief Information Officer.

“I am delighted that Hong Kong is the first city in the Asia Pacific region to host this prestigious event for the global Internet community. The Internet Hall of Fame celebrates pioneers of a technology which has transformed the way we live, work, and learn.  With an extensive range of information resources and services, the Internet has made our world more productive, efficient and convenient.  It promotes knowledge-sharing and global connectivity.  The Internet also opens up seemingly endless possibilities for the future.  Hong Kong people have embraced the Internet age as an integral and indispensable feature of our generation,” stated Mr. John Tsang, Financial Secretary, the Government of Hong Kong SAR.

.Asia Registry Partners with NameJet & RightOfTheDot.com to Auction Premium 3-4 Character Numeric .Asia Domains

DotAsia Organisation, registry operator of the ‘.Asia’ top-level-domain, announced that it has partnered with NameJet.com and RightOfTheDot.com to auction a series of never-before-released premium numeric domain names.

Through these auctions, approximately 150 three and four character numeric .Asia domain names such as 333.asia, 777.asia and 8888.asia will be offered to the public for the first time.

The auctions are scheduled to begin on May 1st, 2014 although they are all opened now for backordering and bidding

NameJet is a proven leader in the Asian auction marketplace in that approximately 30% of NameJet visitors in the past year came from Asia. NameJet has recently auctioned numerous premium Chinese .COM domains and numeric domain names, highlighted by liu.com selling for $155,688 in January 2014 on the NameJet platform. “We have had great success selling domains to Asian buyers,” said Matt Overman, General Manager of NameJet. “Numeric domain names are highly prized by our customers and we’re excited to continue to grow this inventory.”

“The recent success of NameJet in targeting buyers in Asia has been impressive,” said Edmon Chung, CEO of DotAsia. “Trying some of our numeric names on the NameJet platform makes a lot of sense. Hopefully we can take advantage of the momentum they have built. Three and four character numeric domain names are universally understood, easy to remember and very popular in the East. Not only are they short and meaningful names, they also contain a keyword and geographical identifier – Asia, increasing the chances of being found by people and search engines alike.”

“Large corporations are already using their .Asia domains with sites such as Honda.asia and LiveNation.asia,” said Monte Cahn, President and Director of RightOfTheDot.com, a leading domain industry consultancy firm specializing in new and existing premium domain sales and strategy, contention resolution and auction services. “Having participated in the successful launch of .Asia in 2008, we are excited to work with DotAsia and NameJet in managing the successful release of these never-before-registered premium .Asia domain names.”

Looking at the “Top 100 sales of 2014” as recognized by DNJournal.com, 13 out of the top 21 sales are for the China market, including 100.com which sold for $950,000. In 2013, another three-character numeric domain, 114.com, was sold for a whopping 2.1 million dollars. With expanding economies and growing access to technology, Asia has one of the world’s largest and fastest growing Internet populations. For example, China currently has more Internet users than any other country, with 600 million people online. However, that number only accounts for 42 percent of the country’s population, leaving considerable room for growth. In contrast, many Western nations already have Internet penetration rates higher than 75% percent.
