Domain Name Commission warns .NZ registrants
The Domain Name Commission (DNC) is warning people who have a relationship with 24/7 hosting, or who are considering using their services in future, to beware of their activities in respect of the registration and management of .nz domain names. This warning does not include their hosting services, for which the DNC has no responsibility.
The DNC has received complaints in relation to the following:
- 24/7 hosting receiving money for a 12 month renewal of a domain name but only renewing the name for a month
- 24/7 hosting registering some of the names they register in their own name rather than in the name of the person requesting the registration meaning the true registrant cannot manage or control the domain name
- 24/7 Hosting putting their email address in the record meaning that if the registrant requested a UDAI (the code to allow a transfer to a new registrar) it would be sent to 24/7 and not to the registrant
- 24/7 Hosting failing to respond to email enquiries and apparent disconnection of the company’s 0800 number.
The DNC has investigated these complaints and sought a response from 24/7 Hosting. As a result of 24/7 Hosting’s failure to respond to DNC’s requests, DNC has found the complaints to be valid.
As of 26 May 2014, 24/7 Hosting have made contact with the DNC and acknowledge that they have not been fulfilling their requirements to their customers but that a change of ownership of the company is in progress and that their priority is rectifying the concerns outlined above. The DNC notes this contact but still has concerns about their ability and capacity to address fully the concerns raised by the DNC.
Debbie Monahan, Domain Name Commissioner, said 24/7 Hosting’s behaviour has been contrary to the .nz policies that were created to protect registrants.
“It is this lack of protection for registrants that is of concern to the DNC and why this warning is being issued,” she said.
24/7 Hosting is not an authorised registrar for .nz domain names. Anyone who has a .nz domain name registered through 24/7 should consider making contact with the authorised registrar used by 24/7 Hosting. In many cases, it appears 24/7 Hosting used Voyager and they can be contacted at 0800 477 333 option 2 for support or

to discuss their options if they have any concerns or questions.
Alternatively, 24/7 Hosting have given an undertaking that they are now in a position to address complaints from their customers. They say a support ticket can be submitted via the interface at https://support.247hosting.co.nz/clientarea.php, and that they will respond to e-mails sent to

5 reasons why Aussies love net.au domain names by George Pongas, AusRegistry
This May we launched our $1 net.au domain name campaign and we are thrilled to see Australians embrace the promotion and register their net.au domain names in droves.
So far, over 25,000 new net.au domain names have been created this month, eclipsing the 6,500 created May last year. This significant spike in registrations can be directly attributed to the AusRegistry promotion, currently supported by participating Registrars.
Why are people responding so well to this campaign? Is it just the price drop, or are there other compelling reasons that are drawing people to net.au domains?
5 reasons Aussies love net.au
Major brands such as the ABC, ACMI, iiNet and Triple J already choose to host their websites on a net.au domain. Other than the special price drop for this month, here are five reasons to register a net.au:
1. Trust
Our research shows Australians trust websites ending in .au because they identify that the domains belong to Australian businesses.
The effective regulation and registration policy reforms over the past 12 years have helped to make net.au a trusted and secure namespace for both registrants and Internet users.
2. Availability
There are currently 2.8 million .au domain names and only 300,000 of these are net.au. The vast majority of domain names in Australia are com.au, which accounts for 2.4 million domains, or 86% of the namespace.
With fewer net.au domain names registered, finding a short, meaningful and memorable domain name is far more likely.
3. Intrinsic value
For $1, you can’t go wrong with a net.au domain name this month. But how much is net.au domain name really worth? According to IPNeighborhood, more than five net.au domain names have been sold on the aftermarket for more than $10,000, with creditcards.net.au selling for more than $22,000.
IPNeighborhood also reports the top 100 net.au domain names sold at aftermarket for a cumulative total of $140,293; an average of $1,403 per domain and a median of $609.
4. Call to action
Australian consumers are very familiar with hearing and seeing com.au and net.au domain names within marketing and advertising material. This conditions us all to navigate the web using .au domain names, making com.au and net.au domain names the best call to action option for businesses.
5. Versatility
Savvy businesses will register both com.au and net.au domain names. An obvious motivation is for brand protection, however, there are other compelling reasons. For example, you can use net.au domain names to separate technical applications related to your online presence. Or with so many available domains – a net.au makes a great campaign vehicle.
We registered getyour.net.au domain for our promotion for this very reason!
With five great reasons and only five days remaining in our getyour.net.au campaign, there has never been a better time to register a net.au domain name.

Coordination Center for TLD RU/.РФ : Lack of email support hinders development of Internationalized Domain Names
Olga Alexandrova-Myasina from the Coordination Center for TLD RU/.РФ spoke at the third International Mobile Conference about internationalized domains and problems hindering their development in the modern Internet landscape.
You can read the announcement after the jump :
“The third International Mobile Conference #MBLT14 took place in Moscow on Friday, May 23, gathering IT experts from around the world. The agenda focused on new projects, reports, interviews and debates on the most important and up-to-date issues.
Olga Alexandrova-Myasina, the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ’s head of information service, spoke at the conference. She discussed internationalized domain names (IDN) and problems hindering their development in the modern Internet landscape.
She said the Cyrillic domain, .РФ, has had great influence on the development of IDNs. “The .РФ domain is the world’s largest IDN and a model inspiring many national registrars to search for innovative marketing solutions and to promote internationalized domains to customers in their countries,” she said.
She also touched upon some serious problems that are, in her opinion, inhibiting further IDN development around the world, preventing end users from fully employing the advantages of such domains. She pointed out the lack of support for internationalized domain names from some popular apps, as well as the absence of a full-fledged email system in these domains.
“The Coordination Center has been working consistently for the past two years to eliminate these problems. It proved fairly easy to resolve IDN support problems with most popular browsers; what is now left is dealing with email client support. We have contacted the global Internet giants Facebook and Microsoft, asking them for assistance in organizing email support in non-Latin alphabet-based domains, and have reached a general agreement on improving the necessary services. We have now sent similar requests to other major developers of Internet services and email apps. Negotiations on the development of new possibilities and the introduction of new protocols are underway,” she said.”
