Barclays Moving to New gTLDs To Enhance Security As Does Eiffel Tower
Barclays Bank has started the transition to use their new gTLDs .barclays and .barclaycard in a move the bank believes will add an extra layer of security for customers and clients as only Barclays and Barclaycard will be able to set up websites ending in .barclays and .barclaycard.
And the Parisian icon the Eiffel Tower has also moved its online domain to toureiffel.paris in a boost to the presence of the new gTLD that currently is the 54th largest gTLD with 17,796 registrations according to nTLDstats.com.
For Barclays, a 325 year-old bank with an extensive presence in Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia, the move is intended to streamline its customer experience as it moves away from the traditional location-specific .com and .co.uk web addresses.
It is believed to be one of the first banks to have begun using its new gTLD along with BNP Paribas (.bnpparibas) and one of the first companies to announce it will move all its online presence to its new gTLD. Other brands to have begun using their new gTLDs include AXA, CITIC, the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, the Melbourne-based Monash University, Bloomberg, BMW and Mini, Aquarelle, William Hill, Mango, Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget and Merck.
“The launch of the .barclays and .barclaycard domain names creates a simplified online user experience, making it crystal clear to our customers that they are engaging with a genuine Barclays site,” said Troels Oerting, Barclays Group Chief Information Security Officer.
“This clarity, along with the advantages of controlling our own online environment, enables us to provide an even more secure service, which we know is of utmost importance to our customers, and ultimately serves to increase trust and confidence in Barclays’ online entities.” Millions of Barclays and Barclaycard customers use digital banking every day, allowing them to bank safely and securely whenever and wherever they want.
The migration to .barclays and .barclaycard domain names has already begun for the non-transactional parts of the estate, with the introduction across all sites being gradually phased over time. During this transition, automatic domain redirects will ensure customers still reach the appropriate page.
