SOPA.com is up for sale for $50,000

The domain name SOPA.com has been listed for sale for $50,000.The domain name is up for sale at Latonas .

Rick Latona made the announcement yesterday.Even though SOPA could mean Soup in spanish and sweep in Swedish,SOPA means Stop Online Piracy Act . Stop Online Piracy Act is a law that will allow US government tell ISPs which sites to block .

You can read Rick Latona’s announcement after the jump :

“Latona’s has secured the listing for sopa.com. There’s something about this name that I like and thought was blog worthy. Let’s see, what is it?

Oh, it means “sweep” in Swedish. Wait, that’s not it.

In domainer terms it’s a cvcv or consannant-vowel-consannant-vowel. “so” – “pa”. It has a nice ring to it.

Hey I speak Spanish. Of course. It means “soup”. “Sopa de tomate por favor”. I wonder what the global market for soup is anyways? Incidentally, I’m told it also means “soup” in Portuguese and my Filipino friends pointed out that it means “sofa” to them. To the Greeks, it actually means “shut up” but I’ll sopa about that now.

In all seriousness, we all know why it’s a great name. It’s the term flying around the media. And if congress gets its way, it’ll stay in the media for a long time to come.

It means “Stop Online Piracy Act” which is the name given to House Bill 3261. It would let the U.S. government tell ISPs which sites to block and give them the power to fine companies which link to those blocked sites. This is not the sort of legislation that makes internet companies happy.

As a business person, I have to admit that it’s comforting to know that it does mean “soup” in Spanish. That’s a nice safety net. Any buyer can feel comfortable knowing that it still has value when the news has run its course.”
