Dell wins ten domain names in arbitration

An arbitrator with the National Arbitration Forum has awarded ten domain names to DELL.

The 10 disputed domain names are : dellcomputersblog.com, dellcomputerslaptop.com, dellcomputersnow.com, dellcomputersrepair.com, dellcomputersshop.com, dellcomputerssite.com, dellcomputersstore.com, delltechcomputers.com, michaeldellcomputers.com and yourdellcomputers.com

The company submitted a complaint to the National Arbitration Forum on March 9,asserting legal rights over the disputed domain names. DELL owns many trademark registrations for the “DELL” mark all over the world. Therefore,it is more than obvious that the disputed domain names are confusingly similar to its trademark. Moreover,DELL contended and managed to demonstrate that the respondent registered and used the disputed domain names in bad faith .

“Respondent’s , , , , , , , , , and domain names resolve to websites containing links to third-party websites directly competing with Complainant.  Not only are the domain names themselves highly likely to cause confusion but the titles of the displayed pay-per-click links are also clear references to DELL”

The Panel ordered the disputed domain names to be transferred from the respondent to the complainant .

15 Millionth .DE Domain Means Flowers

As earlier reported, the 15 millionth .DE domain name was registered on 18 April, at precisely 12:56 CEST. Maybe the gift for 15 million domains is flowers, as the domain name to take the gong was floristennetzwerk.de, which means “florists’ network.”

“With my website I want to provide a purchasing portal for florists to order flowers and plants, avoiding the usual channels via intermediaries. I am a qualified florist myself and can build on 30 years of experience. And since I want to reach the green trade in Germany with my offer, it was clear to me that I needed a domain under .DE. I have the most beautiful profession in the world. Flowers make people smile and are the only product that does not really need any marketing.” said the registrant Alexander Kleerebezem.

Every month there is an average of about 50,000 .DE domains registered as .DE cements its position as the world’s largest ccTLD, and second largest TLD overall.

The largest TLDs in order are .COM, which has 102,169,176 registrations, then .DE. Third is .NET with 14,652,646 registrations, then .UK (United Kingdom – 10,047,549), .ORG (9,916,594), .INFO (7,951,936), .TK (Tokelau), .NL (Netherlands – 4,907,148), .EU (European Union – 3,609,733) and then rounding out the top ten is .RU (Russian Federation – 3,779,611)

The first .DE domain names were registered in 1986 when the ccTLD was registered in the IANA database. In the beginning, the domain names are administered by a network operator located in the USA. In 1988, .DE administration was transferred to the University of Dortmund, initially handling the procedures rather informally and simply recording registrations in a manual list. Starting with only six .DE domains, the list soon grew at a continually increasing pace. About a decade later, the time came to create a sustainable basis for domain registration and administration. Early in 1997, 37 German Internet service providers got together and formed DENIC eG. At that time about 50,000 addresses are already registered with DENIC.

In April 1999, there were 500,000 .DE domain names registered, and in October of the same year the one millionth domain was registered.

“To have one’s own internet presence is quite attractive for German citizens,” said Sabine Dolderer, CEO of DENIC. “Nearly every sixth of them has their own .DE domain. It has always been our special concern to underscore the importance of .DE as a country code. To this end, we enabled the use of special characters of the German alphabet like umlauts or letters with accents and the German eszett in domain names. This makes it easy to identify oneself with the Top Level Domain .DE. And of course it also is the commitment and great performance of our members who offer first-class service to the end client that has helped us to become the largest country code Top Level Domain in the world.”

The above statistics are sourced from RegistrarStats.com for gTLDs, individual registries for ccTLDs except .TK whose ranking is from Verisign’s Domain Name Industry Brief.
