“Nominet and Gwynedd Council have today announced an important partnership to support the two new Top Level Domains for Wales on the internet; .cymru and .wales.

Nominet is the not-for-profit company responsible for running the .uk domain name system.  Next year, the company will be launching two new Welsh domains allowing people to register domain names ending in .cymru and .wales to demonstrate their Welsh identity, language and culture online.

To support the launch of these domains, Nominet sought a contact centre partner to provide bilingual customer support.  Gwynedd Council’s Galw Gwynedd service in Penrhyndeudraeth has been selected to provide this service under a three year contract.

Commenting on the new partnership, Jo Golley, Nominet’s Commercial Manager for .cymru and .wales said: “We are delighted to have found such a strong partner for this service in Galw Gwynedd. They are ideally placed to help us deliver on our commitments to run a fully bilingual service that provides ongoing economic benefit to Wales.

When the Welsh Government endorsed our application, we promised to work toward ensuring .cymru and .wales provides economic benefit to the whole of Wales. Locating the call centre in Gwynedd demonstrates how we are meeting this objective.”

The new service will be operational early next year. It will provide information and support via phone and email to people who wish to register a .cymru or .wales domain name.

“I am pleased that, through this partnership, Galw Gwynedd can play a small part in promoting Wales and the Welsh language on the web” said Gwynedd Council Cabinet member, Cllr Ioan Thomas.

The service will operate with dedicated staff, and technology from the Galw Gwynedd building in Penrhyndeudraeth. It is expected that there will be three new part-time posts for the length of the contract with two additional temporary posts during the launch period next year.  “

TLD Hopping Pirate Bay Forced To Move Once Again

Following the seizure of its .sx domain name, The Pirate Bay has once more been forced to change its domain, this time moving to .ac, the ccTLD for Ascension Island.

Its previous domain with the Sint Maarten ccTLD was shut down Monday night. The Pirate Bay has previously used the ccTLDs of Iceland (.is), Sweden (.se), Greenland (.gl). The latest stop with .ac is only temporary though and is the fifth TLD used in 2013.

“Fearing a domain seizure by the Swedish authorities The Pirate Bay quickly switched to a Greenland-based domain in April, later hopping to Iceland, and eventually landing .SX domains as other problems became apparent,” reported Torrent Freak.

“The AC domain is directly connected to the UK, so it’s just a quick stop there,” a Pirate Bay insider told Torrent Freak. After solving some technical issues the infamous torrent site plans to move to the Peruvian .PE ccTLD.

The latest seizure has come about following pressure from the entertainment industry, the .sx ccTLD appearing to seize the domain, Torrent Freak also reported. “The torrent site itself hasn’t been taken down and has quickly relocated to a new address on Ascension Island’s .AC ccTLD.”

“It’s seems possible that the domain seizure is connected to pressure applied by Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN, which represents a variety of copyright holders,” Torrent Freak also reported.

“Last month BREIN sent a letter to the contact email address for The Pirate Bay’s domain, which is registered to site co-founder Fredrik Neij. In their letter BREIN pointed out that the site infringes on the rights of copyright holders worldwide.

“The group added that the .SX domain is controlled by the Dutch part of Sint Maarten, suggesting that BREIN has jurisdiction over it.”

“We expressly point out that by registering domain names and using these and/or allowing these to be used by The Pirate Bay, you infringe on the rights of Rights Owners. Therefore, the Rights Owners hold you liable for the damages that they have suffered and will suffer from your actions,” the letter read. The letter threatened a €25,000 per day fine if the site remained online.

The Pirate Bay moves to .AC Domain Name

It appears that the domain name registry of Sin Maarten have seized The Pirate Bay’s .SX domain name. The domain name has been relocated to .AC ccTLD.

According to TorrentFreak.com, following pressure applied by Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN, The Pirate Bay’s .SX domain name has been seized, forcing the torrent site to move to a new address on Ascension Island’s .AC ccTLD.

However, The Pirate Bay wants to relocate to a much safer place in the near future, probably to the Peruvian .PE ccTLD.

This is the fourth time The Pirate Bay has relocated. In April,2013, The Pirate Bay moved to Greenland-based domain, than to Iceland and eventually switched to .SX domain.
