Nominet’s new Domain Lock Option Offers Enhanced Security for .UK Domain Names
UK registry Nominet announced today that it is now offering registrars the option of locking high-value .uk domain names at the registry level,adding this was an additional level of security against DNS hijacking.
You can read the press release after the jump:
“UK registry Nominet is now offering registrars the option of locking high-value .uk domains at the registry level, adding an additional level of security against Domain Name System (DNS) hijacking.
The Domain Lock tool inserts additional, manual authentication requirements into the processes for modifying domain names.
The tool is targeted at high-traffic websites with substantial brand protection and security interests but can be applied to any .uk domain.
DNS hijacking occurs when an attacker gains unauthorised access to the DNS system and modifies registration data for malicious purposes – for example, by redirecting traffic to a different website that could display objectionable material or be used for phishing.
DNS attacks are rare, but on the increase. They have the potential to disrupt business and damage consumer confidence. Nominet is focused on offering increased security in the management and registration of domain names, and helping companies to protect their brands online.”
TMCH Outlines Deterrent Effect Of Its Clearinghouse
[news release] As key stakeholders in the domain name world turn their attention to the ICANN Singapore meeting this week, the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) can reveal that over 500,000 Claims Notices (CNIS) have been delivered, of which 95% of the queries for trademark terms are not being followed through to a live registration. Notices issued by the TMCH are sent as a warning to anyone attempting to register a domain name which matches a trademark term recorded in the TMCH and this metric clearly shows the deterrent is working.
So far, less than 70 of the 1,300 applied for Top-Level Domains (TLDs) are both live and in the phase of accepting registrations from the general public, yet the number of warnings issued by the TMCH clearly indicates a high level of interest in trademarked terms from third parties.
The data is revealed in conjunction with a key TMCH milestone – the first anniversary since opening for submission of trademarks. To date, the TMCH is providing protection to over 10,000 brands and businesses and over 28,000 trademarks have been recorded within its database. Since its inception, the TMCH has worked continually to raise awareness of its critical function and to maximise the benefits it offers to trademark owners. Crucially, by now it provides an ongoing notification service which is not time limited, as well as protection for previously abused terms.
Jan Corstens, Worldwide Project Director at Trademark Clearinghouse and Partner at Deloitte commented, “Our firm message is to encourage any trademark holders who have yet to record their marks with the TMCH to come forward as soon as possible – it’s not too late to benefit. The TMCH remains the only universal rights protection system across the entire new gTLD programme and by recording protected terms in the TMCH, trademark owners are being offered the best protection available as more new domains are deployed. Together with the URS and UDRP, the TMCH completes ICANN’s right protection toolbox and is the first line of defense and the most cost efficient way before taking any litigating step.”, Corstens continued.

Afnic : What is the Average age of a domain under the .FR TLD ?
Afnic, the company behind .FR domain extension, revealed that the average age of a domain name under the .FR TLD is 3,8 years.
You can read the announcement after the jump:
“This month’s issue of the Report focuses on the age of domain names under the .fr TLD. Highlights in the latest issue include the following:
The existence of an age pyramid within the .fr TLD, in which the proportion of “old” names decreases as their age increases.1.8% of domain names in the portfolio as of March 2014 were registered between 1995 and 2000, against 6.4% between 2001 and 2005, 34.7% between 2006 and 2010, and 57% between 2011 and 2014;
The renewal rate of a domain name correlates with the age of the name. For example:
– Domain names registered less than two years ago are less likely to be renewed than those registered 2-5 years ago;
– The renewal rate is close to 100 % for domain names registered more than 5 years ago.
