Over 10,000 Domain Names Seized by Interpol
Interpol announced that it has shut down 10,600 websites as part of the largest-ever global operation targeting fake medicines.
The operation called Operation Pangea VII led to 237 arrest worldwide.Nearly 200 enforcement agencies from 111 countries have taken part in this operation.

“Nearly 200 enforcement agencies across 111 countries have taken part in Operation Pangea VII targeting criminal networks behind the sale of fake medicines via illicit online pharmacies. The operation led to 237 arrests worldwide and the seizure of nearly USD 36 million worth of potentially dangerous medicines.
In terms of the number of participating INTERPOL member countries, Operation Pangea VII is the largest-ever global operation targeting fake medicines. It resulted in the launch of 1,235 investigations, the removal of more than 19,000 adverts for illicit pharmaceuticals via social media platforms and more than 10,600 websites shut down.
In addition to interventions on the ground, which included the identification and dismantlement of three illicit laboratories in Colombia, the operation also targeted the main areas exploited by organized crime in the illegal online medicine trade: rogue domain name registrars, electronic payment systems and delivery services.
Operation Pangea VII was coordinated by INTERPOL, with the World Customs Organization (WCO), the Permanent Forum of International Pharmaceutical Crime (PFIPC), the Heads of Medicines Agencies Working Group of Enforcement Officers (WGEO), the Pharmaceutical Security Institute (PSI) and Europol, with support from the Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies (CSIP) and private sector companies including G2 Web Services, LegitScript, MasterCard, Microsoft,PayPal and Visa.
As well as raids at addresses linked to the illicit pharmaceutical websites, some 543,000 packages were inspected by customs and regulatory authorities, of which nearly 20,000 were seized during the international week of action (13 – 20 May).
Among the 9.4 million fake and illicit medicines seized during the operation were slimming pills, cancer medication, erectile dysfunction pills, cough and cold medication, anti-malarial, cholesterol medication and nutritional products.
“The sole focus of the organized crime networks behind the sale of these fake and illicit medicines is to make money, and they do not care about the potentially life-threatening consequences of their actions,” said INTERPOL Secretary General Ronald K. Noble.
“Operation Pangea has again demonstrated that the joint efforts of law enforcement agencies around the world and with the support of the private sector can have a significant impact in helping to protect the public and turn back crime,” said the INTERPOL Chief.
Following the discovery of the illicit laboratories in Bogota, INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau in Colombia issued the first ever INTERPOL Purple Notices – which seek or provide information on modi operandi, objects, devices and concealment methods used by criminals – in relation to pharmaceutical crime.
NCB Bogota also requested INTERPOL Blue Notices requesting further intelligence regarding suspects in a criminal organization related to pharmaceutical crime in order to trace and locate them.
“The results from Operation Pangea VII are not just about the seizures and arrests, but also about demonstrating the growing commitment from member countries in tackling these crimes, and their increasing expertise,” said Aline Plançon, head of INTERPOL’s Medical Products Counterfeiting and Pharmaceutical Crime (MPCPC) unit.
“The interceptions and seizures physically stop these potentially life-threatening medicines from reaching unsuspecting consumers, but equally as important is shutting down the online platforms used by organized crime to target the public,” added Ms Plançon.
Throughout Operation Pangea VII, INTERPOL’s General Secretariat headquarters in Lyon served as the central hub for information exchange among the participating countries and agencies. From this base, the WCO’s Regional Intelligence Liaison Office for Western Europe coordinated activities between participating customs administrations via CENcomm and the Pangea team, and a mobile Europol office also conducted cross-checks.
Operation Pangea VII is part of INTERPOL’s Turn Back Crime global awareness campaign, which aims to educate society about the ways in which organized crime infiltrates our daily lives, and to assist the public in protecting themselves.”
.CLUB Now Number One New gTLD And Poised To Crack 60,000 Registrations
The .club gTLD passed .guru in the battle of the new gTLDs with the most registrations to become number one yesterday (26 May). At the end of the day, there were 59,400 .club registrations and 59,280 registrations according to nTLDstats.com.
The rise of .club hasn’t quite met the expectations of the registry who predicted the gTLD would be the largest within a week of General Availability commencing, but they did make it within three weeks. And while registrations for all new gTLDs taper off following the first day of General Availability, .guru has managed to maintain over 1,000 registrations per day last week (during its third week with 8,741) compared to .guru with not quite 200 registrations per day, or 1,386 for the week.
They are the only two of the new gTLDs to have launched with more than 50,000 registrations and .club should crack 60,000 today. Back in a now lonely third place is .berlin with 48,163. Following is another four gTLDs with more than 30,000 registrations – .photography (36,539), .在线 (Chinese for “online” – 31,556), .link (31,513) and .email (31,023). Rounding out the top ten are .today (25,306), .tips (22,976) and .company (19,804).
In total there are 835,037 registrations across the 275 gTLDs that have been delegated with 130 registrars that take registrations for at least one gTLD and 37 registries.
Now there are 22 gTLDs with more than 10,000 registrations, 45 with more than 5,000 and 90 with more than 1,000.
Public Interest Registry Opens Registration for New Top-Level Domain in Native Cyrillic Script
Public Interest Registry, the company behind .ORG extension, announced today the general availability of a new Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) in the native Cyrillic script.
You can read the press release after the jump :
” Public Interest Registry – the not-for-profit operator of the .org domain – today announced the general availability of a new Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) in the native Cyrillic script. This IDN is one of three new domains from Public Interest Registry in non-Latin-based scripts – including Devanagari and simplified Chinese – which translate to “organisation” or “institution” and is now available for registration to all interested companies, organisations and individuals.
“Our mission at Public Interest Registry has always been to help organisations maximize their audience reach and better communicate their missions, activities and accomplishments. The launch of these new international domain names speaks to the heart of that mission,” said Brian Cute, CEO of Public Interest Registry. “Now, organisations of all sizes will have the opportunity to brand their website addresses in localized scripts, ensuring that their causes and passions resonate on regional and global levels.”
With more than 50,900 .org registrations, Russia is one of the largest .org markets globally. Currently, there are 143.5 million people in Russia using Russian Cyrillic as the official alphabet for their national language. The new Cyrillic IDN will enable website owners to brand their addresses in the native script, and in turn, make their website more relevant to audiences who speak and write in the widely used language.
“.ru country code has almost 5 million registrations, posing a potential challenge to new registrants who are looking for an address relevant to their cause,” said Alexander Panov, chief executive officer of RU-CENTER. “With the new Cyrillic domain, not only are individuals and organizations gaining access to a fresh name space, but also, they have the added value of registering a domain address in the native language of their target audience.”
In recent years, Public Interest Registry has emerged at the forefront of support for use of alternative scripts, having worked closely with standards-setting bodies and members of the engineering community to create and launch a number of alternative scripts for second-level names associated with .org. To date, the registrar supports 11 IDNs available for user adoption with .org in languages that include Danish, German, Hungarian, Polish, Spanish and Swedish, among others.
