CentralNic and NCC Group join forces to protect businesses and their brands from domain abuse
[news release] CentralNic, one of the world’s leading backend distribution platforms for new Top-Level Domains, has partnered with global information assurance specialist NCC Group, in order to protect its growing list of clients from domain abuse.
NCC Group’s Domain Assured service uses expert threat intelligence to deliver a complete picture of a domain’s threat landscape. This allows registry operators to monitor the overall health of their domain portfolios and major domain abuse types such as spam, typo squatting, hosting of malicious code and phishing. The Domain Assured service also has a rapid response system to immediately notify clients of any attacks.
By integrating the Domain Assured service with its other offerings, including policy assistance, sales and marketing, billing and financing, CentralNic provides the operators with increased visibility of threats and additional assurance that their domains, and consequently their brands, are protected.
CentralNic currently has 21 delegated TLDs on its platform, as well as a stream of already-contracted and newly migrated TLDs that will be launching throughout 2015.
Ben Crawford, Chief Executive Officer at CentralNic, said: “Domain Assured allows our clients to take a proactive approach to seeking out abuse, while having a real-time snapshot of a TLD’s landscape.
“It allows TLD operators to clearly demonstrate their compliance with ICANN’s anti-abuse requirements for new gTLDs, as well as providing peace of mind to all Internet users. It’s a great addition to the services NCC Group offers to make the Internet safer.”
Rob Cotton, Chief Executive Officer at NCC Group, said: “Signing up to Domain Assured further cements CentralNic‘s profile as one of the most service-oriented of the TLD backend providers, as well as underlining their focus on compliance and best practice.”

Carly Fiorina Commits Blunder Not Nominating Key .ORG Domain
For someone in the tech industry you could have expected better. But as former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina announced that she’s running for the Republican nomination to become US President, it became apparent she’d forgotten to register the domain carlyfiorina.org.
The domain was registered in December when it became apparent she was considering running, and someone has got in early. The registrant is now using the domain to showcase their claim she was responsible for around 30,000 retrenchments in her time at Hewlett-Packard.
She is the second Republican to nominate for the Republican candidacy to have domain troubles as the New York Times reports. “Senator Ted Cruz, who failed to secure TedCruz.com. (Mr. Cruz’s troubles go back even further — after his filibuster intended to undercut the rollout of the Affordable Care Act, a website, TedCruzforAmerica.com, was registered and redirected unsuspecting users to the website of the federal health insurance exchange.)”
The Times also notes “some politicians (or potential politicians) have taken notice, most notably Chelsea Clinton, who as BuzzFeed reported, registered nearly every possible domain derivation of her name.”

Berlin Still Number One For .DE, While Osnabruck Leads On Per Capita Basis
Berlin is the city with easily the most .de domain names registered in Germany. As of 31 December 2014 there were 955,484 registered out of a total of 14.6 million. And a further one million domains are registered outside Germany.
Hamburg had the second highest number of registrations (592,192) ahead of Munich (591,199). But on a per capita basis it was different. Osnabruck regains the lead here with 1,416 .de domains per 1,000 people while Munich is also up one place with 426 to second and third, and in the charts for the first time since 2012 was Bonn with 422.
And then there’s administrative districts. Here Starnberg leads with 474 domains per person (third in 2013) ahead of Freising (460, again second) and then Munich (387).
Across the country the average number of domains per person increased by four to 181 .de domains per 1,000 people.
DENIC note that individual statistical outliers can be due to local domain investors with larger-scale domain portfolios in a particular city or region.
On the federal level, the leading trio remains unchanged. The city state of Hamburg with 341 domains per 1,000 people is still by far the leader ahead of Berlin (283) and then Bavaria (209). As in the 2013, Saxony-Anhalt (81) comes last after Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Thuringia with 105 domains per 1,000 people respectively.
The national growth rate further declined to 0.63 percent compared to 1.7 percent in 2013. Far better than the average growth rate score Berlin (+4.6 percent) and Schleswig-Holstein (+4.1 percent). Among the federal states in the East of Germany, only Brandenburg (+1.4 percent) and Thuringia (+1 percent) exceed the annual mean value. However, declines in domain numbers are recorded only in the Western part of Germany, in Bavaria (-2.5 percent) and in the hanseatic cities of Bremen (-1.2 percent) and Hamburg (-1.1 percent). Nevertheless, related to absolute numbers, the Free State of Bavaria with more than 2.61 million .de domains still occupies rank two after North Rhine Westphalia, which remains in the lead with 3.25 million .de domains.
Internationally, the year-on-year total domain growth rate for 2013/2014 was 1.4 percent compared to 2.0 percent in 2012/2013. This is an increase by about 219,000 domains (previous year: 309,000). Furthermore, the 15.8 million .de domains that were registered at the end of 2014 included 1,097,000 domains registered to registrants outside of Germany (2013: 986,000). This corresponds to about 6.9 percent of the total number of domains registered under .de. Registrants of .de domains originate from 217 countries. Like in the past, German domains are particularly popular in the United States (15 percent) and the Netherlands (12 percent) as well as in Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates with 8 percent respectively.
Overall, 15,811,430 domains were registered with DENIC on 31 December 2014. Statistically, nearly every fifth person of the Federal Republic of Germany has registered a domain under the TLD .de. Germany consistently ranks fourth in the world after the Netherlands, Switzerland and Denmark.
If you’re keen for more statistical analysis, DENIC has provided comprehensive data and graphic material as well as the complete regional analysis in form of an Excel file for all the 402 cities and districts in the statistics section of the DENIC website going back to 1995. In addition to absolute values, the statistics provide data on the number of domains related to the number of inhabitants, complemented by maps and diagrams showing the absolute and the relative distribution of domestic domains as well as of domain holders residing outside of Germany.
