.XYZ Passes 250,000 Registrations
.XYZ, which went into general availability a month ago, passed 250,000 registrations. The new gTLD is now the first to pass the 250,000 milestone.
At the time of writing this article, there are 250,731 .XYZ registrations. 86% of all .XYZ registrations are registered at Network Solutions.
.XYZ domain name registrations pushed the total amount of new gTLD domain names in the zone file over 1.4 million.
.Berlin comes in second place with 136,000 registrations, while .Club is in third place with 79,240 registrations.
IANA Transition: Formation of the Coordination Group
On 14 March 2014, the NTIA announced its intention to transition its stewardship role of IANA functions, and called upon ICANN to launch and facilitate a process with the community to derive a proposal to transition the IANA functions to the global multistakeholder community, meeting the criteria set out by NTIA .
Following community consultation, the process for developing a proposal for this transition was posted on 6 June 2014. As part for this process, a Coordination Group will be responsible for preparing a transitional proposal respective of the differing needs of the various affected parties of the IANA functions.
The Coordination Group is comprised of the individuals nominated by each represented community. These 27 individuals represent 13 communities of both direct and indirect stakeholders.
Communities represented in the Coordination Group were urged to launch internal processes to select their representatives, and submit those nominations to ICANN by 23:59 UTC on 2 July 2014 through a provided submission form.

.WANG – 15,000 Registrations on Day One of General Availability
[news release] Zodiac Registry is pleased to announce that 15,000 .wang domain names have been registered during the first 24 hours of its General Availability, which started on 00:00, June 30, Beijing time. Within the first 2 hours, more than 7,000 domain names were taken.
“We are very pleased with our day one performance in an unprecedented and over-crowded new gTLD launch space”, commented Eugene Li, CEO of Zodiac Registry, “thanks to our team and our partners. It’s an impressive debut, considering the market conditions and the constraints we have.”
.wang is the first Zodiac-operated gTLD that has entered General Availability. An ingenious Chinese pinyin with multiple meanings, .wang’s successful launch demonstrates its appeal to not only the Chinese but also to the broader market.
“This is a good start”, says Eugene Li, “but it’s just the beginning. We are continuing to expand our registrar network and we hope by the end of this year, .wang will be among the top five new gTLDs.”
Dubbed “the king of the net”, .wang has no registrant eligibility criteria so it is open for everyone to register. It is also strategically priced as an affordable new gTLD. Only a very small number of premium names are reserved by the registry so many great domain names, including three-character ones, are still available.

Second Level .UK Registrations Top Six Figures In Under 4 Weeks
The launch of second level .uk registrations has been a success with over 100,000 registrations since their launch on 10 June, but there were almost 225,000 registrations across all .uk domains meaning registrations of .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk domains were greater than .uk.
But it was a bumper month for .uk (United Kingdom), and the biggest since March 2000 when registrations nudged 225,000.
“Given that the domain name market is more competitive than ever before, this is a fantastic endorsement of the power of the UK brand,” Eleanor Bradley, Nominet’s Chief Operating Officer said.
“We’re pleased not only that our new .uk domain has hit this milestone, but that other .uk domains such as .co.uk and .org.uk continue to be so popular as hundreds of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) hit the market. It shows that highlighting your UK connection continues to be a compelling prospect for businesses and individuals online.”
Existing .uk registrants are being given first choice to register their existing third level domain (eg. .co.uk) with the corresponding second level domain. However Nominet note that new second level registrations are proving popular with over one third (36%) being new, unique registrations in the past week.
There are over 10.5 million domains registered in the UK namespace making it the third largest ccTLD behind .tk (Tokelau) with 24.5 million registrations, but these domains are given away for free. Second is .de (Germany) with 15.7 million registrations.
Including gTLDs, .com is the largest TLD with 113.5 million registrations, followed by .tk, .de, .net (15.2m), .uk and then .org (15.2m).
