50 fellows from 38 countries have been selected to participate in ICANN’s Fellowship program at the 51st Public Meeting in Los Angeles, 12-16 October 2014.

Government To Release Hindi Domain Names on August 15
The Department of Information Technology and Electronics (DeitY) announced today that it will be launching Hindi language domain names on August 15,2014.

“The Department of Information Technology and Electronics ( DeitY) will be launching Hindi language domain names this Independence Day that could boost Internet governance and access in rural and remote areas.
The PMO Website (pmindia.nic.in) can be accessed using Devanagari characters (Pradhanmantri.Bharat) as the government will be enabling International Domain Names (IDNs) representation in Hindi language.
“It is proposed to launch .Bharat written in Devanagari script on India’s Independence Day to be celebrated on August 15, 2014,” National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) chief executive Govind told ET.
The policy framework for the implementation of .Bharat country code top level domain (ccTLD) has already been completed in collaboration with various government agencies such as the NIXI and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).
“Internet is a global resource and has a key role in socio-economic development of a country. Native languages play a critical role. The initiative will enable nearly half-a-billion Hindi speaking people in the country,” said Govind.
The initiative will facilitate those having Hindi as their first language and cannot access Internet using English characters. The government further plans to introduce other local languages such as Bengali, Punjabi, Gujrati, Tamil and Urdu.
Govind feels that local language content is crucial for the better proliferation of Internet and this feature is expected to enhance its relevance in rural, remote and far-flung areas, further bridging the digital divide.
Sarkar.Bharat and Shiksha.Bharat have been reserved for government and educational institutions while the Union Territories and states have been asked to register their respective names under the .Bharat domain name.
The .IN Registry, a nodal agency of NIXI, is also approaching government departments, public sector undertakings and business organizations to progressively adopt .Bharat domain name for Internet engagement.”

Domain name auctions
Domain names can be bought and sold. A specific domain name can be bought for a limited period (often for one or two years), but ownership will then expire. It can be renewed by the existing owner, but if they decide they no longer want to use it, or they forget to renew it, then the domain name can be sold.
Naturally, there is sometimes high demand for popular names, so it’s essential to be able to get in quickly to snap them up before anyone else gets a chance. This is why the process is known as ‘snapping’.
If you want a particular domain name, or you want to buy several for future use or sale, then you may need to become involved in an online auction. But to achieve success, you must understand the precise timeline of a domain name being released for sale, and be ready to make your bid at just the right moment.
The timeline for releasing a domain name
When date for expiry of a domain name is reached, the owner has 40 days grace period in which to renew. Services that support the website may be stopped during this period, but the option to renew is still valid. There is no penalty for the owner if they renew within this period.
