Chehade Answers Domainers Concerns

ICANN’s executive Mr. Fadi Chehade has stirred a lot of comments after his statement in Davos about domains purchasers who were described as individuals wanting to earn more and more for the addresses they submit for selling later on.

In a detailed interview for Huffington Post, he explained how the internet evolved from a small number of domain names to literally hundreds of them in a very short period of time, due to a simple modification, which led to a massive development in this industry.

He also outlined the benefits of the possibility for users to access web addresses in other languages, such as Arabic and called this a globalisation of the system.

As for ICANN’s role in the process of “hogging names” (as he called them), he said that criticism is unjustified as suppliers of services are not to be blamed for the way the final users use that particular service. He also expressed the opinion that higher fees for domain registrations would not stop such practices from happening since the price for domain names is lower in comparison to that for building a website.
