“Saturday night, DNS Belgium was again the victim of a defacement. Apparently, the hackers community turned sights on our public website.

A vulnerability in an upload script caused a leak in the Content Management System. This way, the hacker caused a defacement. After noticing the hack, our website was restored within the hour and the vulnerable upload script was made inaccessible.

On closer examination however, there seemed to be malicious software on our web servers. Therefore, we were forced to put our websites temporary offline. After removing the malicious software, we reinstalled the Content Management System.

Our technical department is currently further analyzing the deface attack. First reports are reassuring and indicate there wasn’t any data stolen or modified from registrars or registrants. Accept for the web server, no other systems (such as the registrar platform and the resolving service) seem to be compromised at this moment.

It is our highest priority to avoid hack and deface attempts. We will therefore test and roll out the last new patches for the Content Management System within the next few days. Furthermore, we will take safety measures to detect and avoid future hacking attempts as soon as possible.”
