UK Police Close Down 2,500 Domain Names
City of London Police announced that they have managed to suspend 2,500 domain names that were illegally selling counterfeit products online.
The Police first sent warning letters to site owners, asking them either to go legit ,or to shut down their website.When neither of those two things happen, the Citly of London Police shut down over 2,500 domain names.The domain names are not yet listed,but all offered counterfeit products of major brands such as Gucci, UGG, Abercombie,Jack Wills,Thomas Sabo and Hollister.
According to the police, the suspended websites were estimated to be “generating tens of millions of pounds for organised criminal gangs”.
“This is evidence of our commitment to clamp down on intellectual property crime. Behind many of these websites lies an organised crime gang funnelling off the money spent by unsuspecting customers on what they think are quality products,” said Andy Fyfe, head of Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) .
“Consumers also need to be aware that by accessing websites like this they are running the risk of their personal details being compromised and being used for other fraudulent scams, as well as exposing their computer to malicious malware,” he added.
