Google Pays $25m For .APP As ICANN gTLD Sale Coffers Grow
Google paid $25,000,001 for the .app gTLD in an auction held last Wednesday (25/3) making it by far the largest amount paid in an auction for a new gTLD string.
And as a result ICANN now has net proceeds of $57,015,622 in its piggy bank as a result of auctions for new gTLDs that were in contention. All proceeds from auctions are being segregated and withheld from use until ICANN’s Board of Directors define a plan for an appropriate use of the funds through consultation with the community.
In the latest auction twelve applicants participated in the two day auction for .APP with one of Google’s entities, Charleston Road Registry Inc., prevailing.
Previously the highest prices paid for a gTLD string was for .blog, which Domain Incite estimates was sold for less than $20 million.
In the .app application, Google “originally proposed .app as a closed registry in which only Google and its partners could register names,” reports Domain Incite.
“However, after the Governmental Advisory Committee pressured ICANN to disallow ‘closed generics’, Google changed its application to enable anyone to register.”
Google Wins Google-Advertising-Start.com Domain Name in Arbitration
Google won another UDRP case seeking to obtain the transfer of Google-Advertising-Start.com. The company submitted the complaint with the National Arbitration Forum on August December 15, 2014.
Google owns many trademark registrations for the “Google” mark all over the world. Therefore,it is more than obvious that the disputed domain name is confusingly similar to its trademark.Moreover,the company managed to demonstrate that the respondent has no rights or legitimate interest in the disputed domain name and that the respondent used the domain name in bad faith .
The arbitrator assigned to the case ruled in favor of Google,indicating that the company has full rights to the disputed domain name .The respondent’s loss was also partly due to the fact that he failed to submit a response in this proceeding ,accepting these way Google’s allegations as fact .

ICANN : Results Available for 25 February 2015 New gTLD Program Auction
On 25 February 2015, Power Auctions LLC, ICANN’s authorized auction service provider, conducted a New gTLD Program Auction to resolve string contention for one new generic top-level domain (gTLD) string: .APP.
Applicants for the string were unable to resolve contention among themselves; thus their contention set proceeded to auction, which is the method of last resort to resolve string contention as prescribed in Module 4 of the New gTLD Program Applicant Guidebook. Subject to payment of the winning price and meeting all other criteria for eligibility, the winner will enter ICANN’s contracting process to sign a Registry Agreement to operate the gTLD.
Twelve applicants participated in the auction for APP. Charleston Road Registry Inc. prevailed with a winning price of $25,001,000.
All proceeds from the Auction are being segregated and withheld from use until ICANN’s Board of Directors define a plan for an appropriate use of the funds through consultation with the community.

ICANN was formed in 1998. It is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It promotes competition and develops policy on the Internet’s unique identifiers. ICANN doesn’t control content on the Internet. It cannot stop spam and it doesn’t deal with access to the Internet.
